Bill Holt says:

I have some peeves about Tony Robbins, but overall he’s an exemplary person.

Basically, what I don’t like is his insistence that he’s not a
‘motivational speaker’. Bullshit. He’s almost arrogant in that regard, as
if being a motivational speaker is taboo. Essentially, motivation is
EXACTLY what people seek from him. If they weren’t attempting to step up,
even from the relatively high levels of accomplishment which some have
established for themselves before ever attending a seminar, they wouldn’t
be looking for his input. He blurs already fine lines like that
unnecessarily, most notably when he makes the ambiguous statement that
‘affirmations’ and ‘incantations’ are vastly different. This becomes a moot
point if one is truly desirous of positive change. His concept of taking
‘massive action’ is the key to ridding the garden of weeds. Getting oneself
mentally driven, focused, and fortified is the same task, however it’s
defined.

Tony is all about motivation, however he wants to package and deliver his
message. He may take the experience of self-fulfillment efforts a bit
further than do most other ‘gurus’, but in the final analysis he’s still a
booster rocket for people. I don’t see how that could negate claims of him
being a ‘motivational speaker’.

There are significant similarities between his philosophies and those of
other self-improvement mentors. His style is certainly his own, but there
are parallels between him, his contemporaries, and his predecessors. For
any of these techniques and mindsets to be sound, regardless of the
teacher, they must all embody fundamental truths.

These two elements of his approach identify my mild dissatisfaction with
Tony, because all of the celebrated ‘masters’ in this general field have
dipped into the same well and drunk from the same fountain of
enlightenment. That’s why I look at him with a bit of disdain when he
speaks somewhat disparagingly, albeit with relative infrequency, about ‘The
Secret’. His presence in that project and the influence he would likely
have been able to exercise on its content value would have been positive
and immense.

Debate is certainly welcome, but I see no need to nitpick my statements. I
regard Tony Robbins and other inspirational high-achievers similarly. Those
who speak with this degree of conviction and confidence and who demonstrate
personal real-world results the likes of which they coax from others are
ingredients in the recipe for success. Their views as individuals do not
constitute the entire recipe.

I continually search for material in this genre which I’ve not yet seen. I
also return to more familiar works of Tony and other like-minded speakers
for confirmation that I am indeed making progress. That process is
motivational, despite Tony’s insistence that such is not his distinction as
a self-realization coach. ; ]
